As much as I love R&B, I find a deep satisfaction and inner peace in performing Debussy’s Arabesque No. 1. One of his earliest works, composed while Debussy was in his 20s, is demonstrates while he became among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His mastery of non-traditional scales and chromaticism may be found in the works of many composers who followed. Although challenging to perform, I have successfully taught it to many students. My grandmother Majorie loved it, and I played it for her in her final days. It made her very happy, and it makes me happy to play it. Enjoy.
