If Only For One Night–Luther Vandross R&B

Hey, I’m John Dolph. You may have heard me play piano at Cliff Bell’s, or Joe Muer or at Von Maur. I also teach piano in Southeastern Michigan to all ages. Some of my students have been with me for five years or more. And I do videos. Detroit is a very cool place to do that and I am proud to be part of the city’s art scene and future. Goode Wyche III and I created Detroit UMENTARY to showcase the ongoing creativity of Detroit music which rivals New Orleans and Nashville as the well springs of American artistry. Debussy – Arabesque No. 1 (John Dolph on Baby Grand Piano)

As much as I love R&B, I find a deep satisfaction and inner peace in performing Debussy’s Arabesque No. 1. One of his earliest works, composed while Debussy was in his 20s, is demonstrates while he became among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His mastery of non-traditional scales and chromaticism may be found in the works of many composers who followed. Although challenging to perform, I have successfully taught it to many students. My grandmother Majorie loved it, and I played it for her in her final days. It made her very happy, and it makes me happy to play it. Enjoy.
